Milly Johnson

Milly Johnson was born in Barnsley, raised in Barnsley and still lives in Barnsley - although she did study in Exeter for four years and emigrate to Haworth in West Yorkshire in the 1980s.

She trained as an actress, teacher, an accountant, a Customer Services and Suggestion Scheme Manager as well as working in a variety of administrative posts for companies dealing with anything from antique furniture to plastic injection moulded poop scoops. Eventually she found a happy existence writing poems and jokes for the greetings card world - helping to kick off the hugely successful Purple Ronnie project - which she still does on a part time basis whilst penning her novels.

Milly always wanted to write and her first attempt was a character called 'The Rampant Rabbit' which she now wishes she had copyrighted. Her first full epic was a gothic novel rejected by the known world, but still languishes in the cupboard awaiting a re-write. Whilst socialising with friends and new babies, Milly realised that she should be writing about love and friendships and the ups and downs of everyday life instead and she never looked back after listening to her intuition.

'I write about ordinary imperfect women with insecurities about the size of their bottoms and dieting and  debt and cleaning and cooking and finding love unexpectedly. The nicest compliments I've had about my books are when readers say 'That's just how I talk to my friends!' I write as I find and I'm a down to earth Northern bird with a love of life and happy endings. Don't read my books if you like arty-farty open endings with no questions answered… I feel duty bound to give my characters the endings they deserve. I want to leave readers with a big smile on their faces when they get to the last word. And give them a bit of hope that there is magic to be found in normal everyday life!'

Milly has published two books: The Yorkshire Pudding Club, The Birds and the Bees and the third - A Spring Affair - will be on shelves in April 2009. She is currently working on her fourth, due March 2010, plus a history of wrestling and a biography of the 7ft 3" artist, chef and Jaws-Bond-Villain lookalike Gary Tiplady (garytiplady.co.uk). When she isn't writing books she is writing jokes, guesting on Radio Sheffield, hanging around with big wrestlers, trying to raise the awareness - and stop - bullying in the workplace, hanging around the booze aisle in Morrisons and tending to her family and other animals.
